Deaf / Blind Program

  • A Deafblind student may have varying degrees of vision and hearing loss. People who are both deaf and blind have unique communication needs that may challenge programs designed for individuals with one or the other sensory impairments. The LIU #12 Deafblind Support Program has a student centered specialized approach that addresses these instruction needs as well as specific communication techniques. Students who are Deaf Blind are entitled to access of the general education curriculum and experiences as a student of the general education environment. Access is rooted in the presumption of competence and orchestrated through an organized process and ongoing collaboration between special educators, general educators, administrators, peers and parents. Though the use of research based practices all students are provided meaningful, inclusive and standard based education programs.

    An intervener is a paraprofessional who provides direct support to a student with deafblindness for all or part of the instructional day. The intervener receives training in communication methods and sensory accommodations that are needed for an individual student with deafblindness to access information in various learning environments. The intervener supports the existing service delivery model, collaborating with the student’s team in implementing the student’s IEP
